The area of action is very degraded, although with ecological and social potential. They were filled with ash from a thermal power plant and have fragmented, waste has been dumped and water retention has lost capacity, causing significant flooding in the port and beach of Alcudia. The solutions included in this project are the result of a participatory process where alternatives were analysed and a line of action around environmental restoration was proposed. They are inspired by nature-based solutions and green infrastructure.

RESTAURALCÚDIA includes actions such as the creation of new flood zones, revegetation and renaturalisation, removal of exotic and invasive vegetation and waste, elimination of barriers, expansion of drainage channels and actions to promote fauna. All this will contribute to improving the state of water bodies by contributing to environmental recovery; mitigating flood risks and adapting to climate change; and to value natural spaces as resources for the local population and tourism.

Some of the actions included in this project are:

  • Dredging to open new flood zones
  • Removal of exotic and invasive vegetation
  • Cleaning up rubbish and debris in Estany des Ponts
  • Measures to promote terrestrial fauna in Estany des Ponts
  • Removal of exoskeletons from invasive polychaetes and construction of islets in Maristany
