SHOW-ME: “Holistic Solutions for Used Clothing Optimization and Efficiency Improvement in the Textile Industry”

PRTR Call for Proposals Project

The SHOW-ME project aims to promote the transition to a circular economy in the fashion industry, by improving the operational efficiency of second-hand garments. The project seeks to increase the capacity to process more second-hand clothes for sale, thus reducing CO2 emissions and water consumption associated with Fast Fashion. In other words, save more clothes from being discarded and extend their lifespan. The project includes four key activities. First, the image processing of garments with a specific environment and retouching functions will be automated. Second, artificial vision algorithms will be developed to automatically identify attributes such as color, type and brand of garments. Third, a put-to-light system will be implemented to prepare orders. Finally, a garment traceability system will be introduced to efficiently manage garments. For all this, a new space will be defined and Mecalux structures will be acquired to effectively organise the garments. To improve the automation of photos and garment attributes, investments will be needed in professional photographic equipment, such as professional cameras, lighting systems and computers with powerful graphics cards. This will allow for high-quality image capture and more efficient feature attribution. The put-to-light activity will require investments in sensors, lighting and electronic elements for its development. In addition, the garment traceability system will need QR code readers, software licenses, and electronic components. This project will allow Micolet to process a greater number of garments, which will result in a significant increase in the number of garments saved from being discarded; The project is expected to process 4 million garments, which represents a significant jump from the current one million garments.

The main objective is to improve the online platform for buying and selling 2nd hand clothing. The project involves going from 125,000 garments per month (1.5 million per year) to 750,000 garments per month (9 million per year), second-hand, processed and then put on sale, producing an estimated saving according to indicators of 4,287.6 tons of CO2 per month and 1,695,222,100 liters of water per month, as a result of “saving” more clothes from being discarded and thus extending their useful life (83% increase). That is, a decrease of 625,000 garments per month that are not destined for incineration processes with and without recovery from landfill.
