The ecosystem of the Genil River has suffered high impacts on the nature of the original riverbank with the transformation of its morphology, with the action of channeling, the deterioration of its river habitat, the associated populations of flora and fauna, invasive species, waste and landscape degradation. The river is perceived as a dirty place and not as a living ecosystem with ecological and landscape potentialities that must be preserved and enhanced. Paseo del Genil proposes a large number of actions, many of them based on Bioengineering techniques, to minimise and control flood risks, undertake ecological and habitat restoration, connect underground water bodies, return the river to a regime closer to the natural one and improve its function as a river corridor of the river, which will allow the connection of habitats located upstream and downstream of the urban section and the flora communities. aquatic and terrestrial fauna.
Some of the actions contemplated in this project are:
Strategy for the restoration and renaturalisation of river ecosystems in the Municipality of Loja and the reduction of the risk of flooding of the urban environment of the Genil River as it passes through Loja (Paseo del Genil)
