A strategy for the prevention of large forest fires through the multifunctionality of the forest and the mosaic landscape

MITECO

The proliferation of forest fires in the Mediterranean environment in recent decades is the alarm signal in the face of the changes that are taking place in our mountains.

The proliferation of forest fires in the Mediterranean environment in recent decades is the alarm signal in the face of the changes that are taking place in our mountains.

Linear firebreaks have proven obsolete and insufficient for extinction. Maintaining the mosaic structure of the mountains allows that, when a fire occurs, the continuity of the fuel is broken, thus avoiding large forest fires.

This project has three main objectives:

  • Prevent forest fires.
  • Protect the soil and defend it against erosion caused by the abandonment of farmland and fires.
  • Recover, conserve and manage the traditional landscape, associated biodiversity and its socio-economic benefits.

A study is planned on the strategy for the prevention of large forest fires applied to the Caroig Massif using criteria of multifunctionality and mosaic landscape; the creation and publication of a DVD and the realization of training courses in forest fires.
