Adaptation of a supplementary feeding point for scavenger birds in the Sierra de Llerás

MITECO

The aim of this project is to conserve the populations of scavenger birds in the Pyrenees, especially the Egyptian vulture, the red kite and the black kite.

The aim of this project is to conserve the populations of scavenger birds in the Pyrenees, especially the Egyptian vulture, the red kite and the black kite.

This initiative aims to ensure the management, maintenance and monitoring of the supplementary feeding point (PAS) of the Sierra de Llerás, in Tremp, Lleida, in the long term, as well as to reduce the likelihood of scavenger birds dying due to the ingestion of toxic substances in the inter-regional landfill of urban solid waste of Tremp. It also seeks to increase the productivity of breeding pairs in the pre-Pyrenean region of Pallars Jussá and its surroundings.

Other objectives are:

  • Consolidate the concentration of Egyptian vultures in the PAS of Llerás.
  • Establish the area as the usual feeding place for the black vulture.
  • Contribute to the study of scavenger birds by reading PVC rings and patagic marks of the different species in the area.
  • To promote, thanks to the above initiatives, ornithological tourism in Tremp and, by extension, in the Pallars Jusá region.

The planned actions are as follows:

  • Construction of an access track to the PAS de Llerás.
  • Installation of a fence permissible to the PAS to prevent the entry of opportunistic mammals.
  • Daily and weekly censuses of carrion birds in the inter-regional landfill of urban solid waste.
  • Regular contacts with the Vallcalent Fauna Recovery Centre in Lleida to find out the number of species that enter the centre due to poisoning.
  • Regular contacts with the Corps of Rural Agents of the Department of Environment and Housing of the Generalitat of Catalonia to find out about the species that are found dead in Pallars Jusá due to the ingestion of toxins in the Tremp waste landfill.
  • Installation of a digital photography camera for automated monitoring of birds.
  • Construction of an observatory within the PAS to promote ornithological tourism and rural development in the region.
