Adaptation of glacial-snow melting water resources to climate change

MITECO

This project aims to know the evolution of the water resources available in the form of ice and snow in order to optimize their management, in addition to studying the decline of the La Maladeta glacial natural monument, in the Posets-Maladeten natural park, in the Pyrenees. Servicios y Proyectos del Ebro, S.A. is the entity that develops the project.

The initiative ‘Study of the adaptation to climate change of water resources from glacial-snow melting by means of a hydrological model’ has the support of the Foundation, through its call for grants.

Within the framework of the project, the sensitivity of the La Maladeta glacial natural monument to climate change has been analysed, making known the effects of the phenomenon on the glacier and on the decrease in available water resources. To this end, data from all the surrounding weather stations have been collected.

Different climate change scenarios have been studied, analysing the volume and surface of the La Maladeta glacier in each of them, which has made it possible to know how climate change affects water resources, as well as the fauna and flora of the environment. Using a continuous hydrological model, it is estimated that due to climate change, the Maladeta glacier may disappear between 2040 and 2050, leaving a small testimonial area.
