Adaptation to climate change in land stewardship projects

MITECO

In Spain, one of the instruments with the aim of conserving natural resources and biodiversity is land stewardship, and among its actions are actions directly related to adaptation to climate change, such as improving ecological connectivity between species, eliminating invasive species that populate some valuable spaces and generating favourable habitats for the most affected species. among many others. Therefore, given the potential role of land stewardship in the fight against climate change and adaptation to it, it is important that land stewardship projects in the Spanish territory adapt by taking measures to adapt their projects to climate change. In this context, the Territorial Stewardship Network, with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation, launched this initiative.

Within the framework of this initiative, a practical guide has been published on how to plan land stewardship projects to adapt to climate change in particularly vulnerable regions of Spain. It includes analysis of exemplary cases that are already implementing climate change adaptation actions.

The manual “Improved governance. Involvement of territorial agents in the planning of stewardship projects to work together on adaptation to climate change” , which includes the analysis of success stories of projects that have incorporated multiple agents to work together on adaptation.

‘Adoption of the Congost river and the Carbonell stream in the Franqueses del Vallès and Canovelles’ developed by the Associació Hàbitats; ‘San Miguel Ornithological Reserve’ by SEO BirdLife; ‘LIFE Montserrat’, a project of the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera; ‘LIFE + Club de Fincas por la Conservación del Oeste Ibérico’ of the Fundación Naturaleza y Hombre; and ‘Recovering our native Cantabrian forests’ by the Lurgaia Foundation, have been the exemplary projects analysed.

In addition, advice has been given and pilot tests have been launched in four projects to adapt their management plans to climate change. These are the following:

– ‘Campo de Lamas’ in the Community of Froján (La Coruña, Galicia).

– ‘Vulnerability of the European pond turtle to climate change: land stewardship as a conservationist strategy’ by the Group for the Rehabilitation of Native Fauna and its Habitat (GREFA).

– ‘The Ariant Biological Reserve, a mountain estate in the Serra de Tramuntana de Mallorca’, a project of the Mediterranean Wildlife Foundation (FVSM).

– ‘Llagostera de Dalt’ by the Paisatges Vius Association.

Finally, a videoconference was held to disseminate the results of the project.
