Adaptation to climate change through FSC certification

MITECO

It seeks the implementation and implementation of adaptation monitoring in the main types of Spanish forest formations.

Climate change affects our forests, knowing the impacts, vulnerability and adaptive capacity of the different forest ecosystems is crucial to develop specific forestry actions to make them more resilient to the impacts of climate change. In this context, FSC Spain, with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation, has developed the project “Adaptation to climate change through FSC certification: implementation and monitoring of an adaptive management protocol in Spanish forests”, the second phase of the initiative “Forest certification as an adaptive forest management tool”. The first phase allowed the design of a pilot system of indicators for monitoring adaptation to climate change in forest ecosystems, integrating them into management.

In this second phase, the methodology developed and the implementation protocol have made it possible to systematize the measurement of indicators of adaptation to climate change in Spanish forests. The diversity of the forest systems studied and the variable availability of information have shown that the application of this protocol must be specific to each forest, involving forest owners and managers, who must implement the most appropriate adaptation measures at the local level.
