An Iberian paleoendemic genus: Rivasmartinezia (Apiaceae)

MITECO

In recent years, a new genus (Rivasmartinezia) of the Apiaceae family (herbaceous plants and phanerogamous shrubs) has been described. In principle, a single species (R. vazquezii) was included in the aforementioned genus, whose known distribution is restricted to a small area of Somiedo (Asturias) where several nuclei are known. Recently, another species of this genus (R. cazorlana) has been described in the Sierra de Cazorla (Jaén), of which only one population is known to be strongly threatened by climate change processes.

As a result of their recent discovery and description, neither of the two species of the genus Rivasmartinezia, despite their small populations of a relict nature, is included in any red list or flora protection catalogue. This project raises the need to analyse the threats to their survival and propose conservation mechanisms to guarantee their viability. The main objective of the project was not only to provide concrete knowledge of these plants and their particular problems, but also to use them as a symbol of the need for knowledge of less apparent biodiversity and the particular problems of their conservation.

The project has allowed a biological and population characterization of two new species (R. vazquezii and R. cazorlana), creating the necessary reports for the inclusion of these species in the different Catalogues of Endangered Species of the autonomous community where they are found and in the Spanish Catalogue of Threatened Species. In addition, this study has been completed with a high level of news broadcast in different media such as digital newspapers, attendance and participation in the VIII Congress of Plant Conservation Biology, the IV Conference on Biodiversity Conservation, summer courses at the University of Oviedo, the realization of a technical seminar in the Somiedo NP and the publication in 2 scientific journals.
