The objective of the project is to contribute to the adaptation to climate change of the coastal areas of Spain with high population density and tourist and cultural interest.
The ENT FOUNDATION was a beneficiary in the 2015 Call for Grants of the FB with the project “Adaptation to climate change of coastal urban areas with high population density and tourist and cultural interest in Spain” with the objective of analyzing the impact and adaptation to climate change in coastal urban areas, paying special attention to climatic factors related to sea level rise and coastal storms.
Three different analyses were performed, with the following main results. First, the evaluation of the exhibition of protected cultural assets of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria against coastal flooding revealed a greater exposure by the Castle of San Cristóbal and the neighborhoods of Triana and Vegueta. Second, the climatic scenario of retreat of beaches in the province of A Coruña evidenced a significant potential loss of their recreational support capacity. Third, the analysis of the possibility of displacement from beach areas in retreat due to climate change to inland border areas in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona indicated that the loss of area and recreational value of the beaches will be difficult to recover without the implementation of other adaptation measures. In addition, the study concluded that the high urbanization of the coast of Spain contributes to greater socio-economic vulnerability and restricts the possibility of beach adaptation.
