The project seeks to increase the quality of Posidonia oceanica meadows through the implementation of ecological anchors in Cala Montgó (Girona).
It is also intended to restore the seabed of the area, replacing a certain number of old anchorages with ecological anchorages and monitoring both the hydrodynamics associated with the new anchorages and the recovery of the meadow around these anchorages.
The initiative responds to a collaboration between the Environmental Physics group of the University of Girona and the Natural Park of Montgrí, the Medes Islands and the Baix Ter (Generalitat de Catalunya).
Specific objectives include:
- Remove a certain number of old anchorages in Cala Montgó.
- To analyse the hydrodynamics of the results in the Posidonia oceanica banks.
- Anchor ecological anchorages in the Posidonia banks.
- Monitor the restoration of their populations around ecological anchorages and the hydrodynamics around them.
- To evaluate the evolution of the biodiversity index of ecological anchorages.
The activities to be carried out are:
- Location of the old anchorages with the greatest impact on the plant’s meadows.
- Removal of the old anchorages in Cala Montgó by expert divers.
- Monitoring campaigns of Posidonia oceanica banks.
- Laboratory experiments in a tank to determine the effect of plants on the waves and flow characteristics in areas with and without vegetation.
- Installation of ecological anchorages on the banks of the Posidonia.
- Campaigns to monitor the quality in terms of biodiversity and water clarity in the areas near the anchorages.
- Determination of the quality indices of the Posidonia oceanica meadow (water clarity, biodiversity and sediment quality).
