Assessment of the effects of climate change and promotion of measures for its mitigation in Gran Canaria

MITECO

“Diagnosis of risks, vulnerabilities and adaptation to climate change on the island of Gran Canaria”, is a project of the Island Energy Council of Gran Canaria (CIEG), which has had the support of the Biodiversity Foundation.

In 2015, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria launched an Island Plan for Adaptation and Mitigation to Climate Change, agreeing to the creation of an Island Commission for Action against Climate Change. Thus, in 2016 the Cabildo promoted various measures to progressively promote action plans in this area. Of particular note is his participation in the Marrakech Summit (COP22, November 2016), his integration into the Covenant of Mayors as coordinator of the 21 municipalities of Gran Canaria, the creation of the Climate Action Group, the design of a Climate Change Strategy adapted to the island and the promotion of the R+D+i Project “East Atlantic International Observatory on Climate Change” to establish adaptation plans in 7 countries of Macaronesia (Morocco, Mauritania, Portugal, Senegal, Gambia, Cape Verde and Spain).

The development of the project has involved the analysis of the context of vulnerability and risks of the island of Gran Canaria, which has determined that the island has a high level of vulnerability to climate change, consequently increasing the level of risk against this phenomenon. The energy sector (energy production and distribution plants; infrastructures; desalination plants; purification; sanitation and water distribution) and biodiversity (invasive alien species and forest fires) have been evaluated.
