With this project it is intended that the population that lives around the Garamaba National Park can visit it in the same way that tourists have done so far to get to know it and that they can collaborate in its conservation.
The entity considers that it is the best way to bring the population closer to the Park and that they know, on the one hand, the importance of its conservation and on the other the activities they carry out in favor of that conservation.
During this course, visits by children and adults will be combined so that, in addition to getting to know the Park, they can see the possibilities it has in the future for tourism. In short, they should understand that in the medium term having a park near their towns of residence can contribute to improving the socioeconomic situation of the area.
To this end, a program of visits to the Park will be organized and each day an adapted truck will go to a village, where it will pick up 40 people, whom it will take to tour the park to enjoy the ecosystem and the animals that inhabit it. They will be accompanied by a monitor who will explain their importance, insisting on the problems posed by the loss of the white rhinoceros and the possibility of losing many other species.
The Park was created primarily to protect the Northern White Rhino and Congo Giraffe. The rhinoceros has disappeared from the park, but there is still a small population of about 100 giraffes and to ensure their conservation, it is necessary to have a better knowledge about their distribution and movements. The initiative will also work in this direction.
The activities to be carried out are:
- Preparation, together with local authorities and school principals, of a programme of visits to the Park, on a monthly basis
- Organization of visits by a group of 40 people who will visit the park to see the animals as any tourist would.
- Lunch and visit of the park facilities, as well as knowledge of the activities that are being carried out.
- Carrying out flights to carry out the giraffe census and get to know their distribution area.
- Installation of GPS collars and satellite transmitters on 5 giraffes to be able to follow their movements throughout the year.
- Daily monitoring of giraffe movement through GIS in order to know their ecology.
