To assess the effects of climate change on the flora and vegetation of the Picos de Europa National Park, multiple monitoring systems of changes in the climate, flora and vegetation of the park have been used, thus contributing to knowledge about global change in the territory.
Specifically, they have planned the following actions:
- Development of descriptive bioclimatic models and indices based on the available meteorological information, provided by the eight meteorological stations installed in the park, to analyse bioclimatic variability.
- Establishment of a network of plots for monitoring flora and vegetation to study the phenological evolution of the upper layer of the forest over the last 24 years, in the vicinity closest to the meteorological stations.
- Development of a protocol for the monitoring of plant bioindicators of climate change in the territory.
