Bases for the conservation of the Cabrera vole in Spain

MITECO

This project aims to show the regression that the Cabrera vole is suffering and generate tools to prevent its extinction.

The project “Bases for the conservation of the Cabrera vole (Iberomys cabrerae) in Spain” aims to show the regression that this threatened mammal is suffering and seeks to generate tools to prevent its extinction.

This initiative of Asociación Galemia will serve to make a diagnosis of the situation in which this species is found in Spain, analyze its regression and draw up guidelines for its conservation. In addition, the project will serve to transmit to public administrations the conservation problems faced by the Cabrera vole with the intention of adapting more effective measures for its protection.

The expected results include preparing a report on the regression of this species and creating an updated and filtered database in which the distribution of the baby in the country is collected. Information packages will also be created for the different autonomous communities and for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment.

Some of the activities that will be carried out to achieve the expected results are:

  • Surveys in the unsampled baby colonies during the first two phases of the project
  • Analysis of its regression in Spain
  • Preparation of a diagnosis 2015
  • Updating and filtering of the bottle distribution database built during the three phases of the project
  • Preparation and sending of reports with relevant data for the conservation of the species to the autonomous communities and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment.
