The purpose is to promote the involvement of citizens in coastal conservation, through the development of volunteer programs in spaces with land stewardship agreements.
Aware that the beaches of the Spanish coast are a benchmark for the tourist product and are a pillar of the economy of our coast, in addition to including unique natural resources, the Biodiversity Foundation is launching a new volunteer program for the improvement and comprehensive protection of the quality of our beaches, which incorporates principles of sustainability in the management of the environmental quality of these spaces.
This programme will continue the philosophy of the previous “Trees, Land Stewardship and Volunteering”, developing volunteering programmes with 20 land stewardship entities, which carry out actions for the conservation of the maritime-terrestrial public domain, and in which at least 4,000 volunteers will participate.
The specific objectives to be achieved include:
- Involve citizens in nature conservation through the development of volunteer programs.
- To promote knowledge of the natural resources that make up the maritime public domain.
- To reduce the deterioration of the spaces that make up the maritime-terrestrial public domain with investment in actions for the conservation, protection, maintenance and improvement of these spaces.
The activities contemplated by the project are:
- Conservation, maintenance, and restoration of vegetation activities for the stabilization of dune systems.
- Improvement of the landscape of urban beaches.
- Actions for the recovery of deteriorated areas.
- Waste removal and beach cleaning.
- Control of invasive alien species.
- Improvement of the habitat of the fauna of the dune systems.
- Restoration of elements linked to sustainable traditional uses.
- Training, communication and environmental awareness actions on the coast.
