The objective is to contribute to the conservation of the brown bear in the Cantabrian Mountains, developing actions included in the Strategy for the Conservation of the species, approved by the National Commission for the Conservation of Nature in 1999.

Through this project, the Brown Bear Foundation will organize, manage and coordinate two Bear Patrols that will carry out their work in the two Cantabrian subpopulations of brown bear.

The specific objectives are:

  • Decrease bear deaths caused by snares or traps.
  • To contribute to the monitoring of the Cantabrian bear population.
  • Promote information on the species and environmental education and training activities.

The main tasks of the patrols will be:

  • Combat poaching, with particular attention to illegal steel ties.
  • Avoid the use of poisons in bear areas.
  • Know the annual census of bears with cubs.
  • Systematically collect information on bear ecology and behavior.
  • Actively participate in environmental education programs and in work days with schoolchildren and university students.
  • Lead guided tours to get to know the Land of the Bears.

Among the activities to be carried out are the location and reporting of poachers, illegal snares and episodes of poisoning, in addition to continuing with the preparation of the census of bears with cubs and monitoring the Cantabrian bear population.

On the other hand, initiatives will be developed to train and raise awareness among schoolchildren, university students and visitors to Natural Parks in bear areas, including the development of guided educational itineraries for students, the holding of talks and field trips for university students and guided tours in Natural Parks.
