The objective of the Blue Flag Program, free of charge for participating municipalities and ports, is to achieve accessible, clean, safe beaches and marinas with adequate environmental information, education and management.

The objective of the Blue Flag Program, free of charge for participating municipalities and ports, is to achieve accessible, clean, safe beaches and marinas with adequate environmental information, education and management.

To this end, it is necessary to activate ordinary and complementary actions of information, training and advice, remotely and in situ, through control and advisory visits to award-winning beaches and ports.

The initiative seeks to improve the environmental awareness and training of municipal technicians and politicians responsible for the management of the more than 600 beaches on the Spanish coast, which annually opt for the Blue Flag, and to promote the participation of coastal municipalities in the development of environmental initiatives, with special attention to biodiversity and the natural heritage of the coast.

The specific objectives are:

• Assess the educational coastal trails of the pilot phase and prospect new trails.
• To develop dissemination materials on the existing blue trails for future visitors and to guide municipalities interested in creating new educational trails.
• Improve the training of municipal technicians in the coastal municipalities of the Basque Country, Cantabria, Catalonia and the Valencian Community in environmental issues.
• Promote the participation of coastal municipalities in the development of environmental initiatives in relation to coastal trails.

Among the activities to be carried out are those related to the specific training of the inspection team of the coastal trails, the preparation of visits to them and the organization of visits to the pilot trails and possible candidate trails. In addition, data and experiences will be collected on the trails examined and materials on the blue trails will be developed. A conference will also be held on this topic.
