Captive breeding programme for the European hare of Iberian origin for the recovery of the Cantabrian population

MITECO

The project aims to contribute to the restoration of the European hare of Iberian origin in its natural distribution area in the north of the Iberian Peninsula.

The project aims to contribute to the restoration of the European hare of Iberian origin in its natural distribution area in the north of the Iberian Peninsula.

To this end, a captive population of European hare of Iberian origin will be created, which is expected to reach 100 or 120 breeding pairs in order to meet the needs of repopulation and reinforcement of populations. Population growth will be achieved through the breeding of individuals in captivity and through specimens captured annually to increase genetic variability.

Genetic monitoring of the specimens is carried out to ensure that the hares belong to the Iberian population of European hare, thus excluding non-Iberian European hare (Lepus europaeus) specimens and hybrids of European hare and Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis). Health monitoring of the individuals on the farm is also carried out to control possible diseases and epidemics.

Finally, specimens will be released in these areas.
