CETASUR – Cetaceans in the South of the Spanish Mediterranean

MITECO

In 2010-2012, proposals for Conservation Plans were presented for nine species of cetaceans in the Spanish Mediterranean.

Actions with high priority include the estimation of abundance and identification of important habitats for each species for their effective protection by declaring these areas with the appropriate protection figures at both national level (e.g. Natura 2000 Network areas, Marine Protected Areas, Marine Reserves, etc.). etc.) or international (e.g. Biosphere Reserves, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Specially Protected Areas of Importance for the Mediterranean, etc.).

In addition, it is proposed to develop low-cost methodologies for the cetacean monitoring programmes of the second phase of the Marine Strategy, which allow compliance with article 17 of the Habitat Directive, and which allow the monitoring plan defined in the Conservation Plans to be carried out. International collaboration will be fostered by giving continuity to the two INTERREG IV programmes, MedPan and POCTEFEX.
