Nature-based solutions are strategies that use nature to address climate change and are an effective and sustainable way to reduce the vulnerability of local communities.

This project fosters social innovation, as leadership is assumed by a group that is often underrepresented in decision-making related to climate change. People with intellectual disabilities will be trained, moderate participatory processes and contribute to decision-making in accordance with the principles of nature-based solutions. In short, this project promotes inclusion, innovation and sustainability in the fight against climate change.

This project seeks to promote the inclusion and participation of people with intellectual disabilities in the identification and design of nature-based solutions that enable them to adapt to climate change and improve their resilience to natural disasters.

To achieve this, it has the following specific objectives:

  • To develop specific capacities and skills in people with intellectual disabilities so that they can lead and promote nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation.
  • Identify nature-based solutions that can improve ecosystem resilience to natural disasters and climate change.
  • Involve local communities in the identification, design and implementation of nature-based solutions in their respective counties and increase their awareness of the importance of inclusion.
  • Raise awareness of the importance of including people with intellectual disabilities in decision-making on environmental and climate issues.
  • Awareness raising and training.
    • Design and adaptation of didactic materials to the characteristics of people with intellectual disabilities.
    • Training “Climate change adaptation agents”.
    • Guided tours to nearby natural areas with climate change issues.
  • Identification of the problems of climate change in Galicia and Nature-based solutions (NBS) that could be implemented for adaptation.
    • Basic study on the main environmental and climatic problems in the regions of Barbanza and Verín.
    • Identification of successful SBN cases and compilation of those that could be replicated in other parts of Spain with similar edaphoclimatic characteristics to those of the regions on which the project is focused.
    • Study on the opportunities and difficulties of implementation of the SBNs analyzed.
  • Dynamization of the agents involved.
    • Elaboration of criteria for the establishment of regional networks for work and support of initiatives.
    • Signing of membership agreements and launching of two networks.
    • Participatory workshops
  • Dissemination and communication of the project.
