CO2-Waste: Protocol for calculation, tool and verification of the Carbon Footprint of municipal waste in Spain

This project aims to establish a unique methodology and tool for calculating the carbon footprint, accepted by all administrations, managers and Municipal Waste (RM) companies in Spain in order to have better quality and comparable information that allows quantifying the reductions in greenhouse gases attributable to the Spanish inventory.

The project “CO2-Waste: Calculation Protocol and Tool, and Protocol for Verification of the Carbon Footprint of municipal waste in Spain” aims to establish a unique methodology and tool for calculating the carbon footprint, accepted by all administrations, managers and Municipal Waste (RM) companies in Spain in order to have better quality and comparable information that allows quantifying the reductions in greenhouse gases attributable to in the Spanish inventory.

This initiative will facilitate the harmonised preparation of periodic reports of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by entities and companies in the sector.

To this end, the consensus of all participants will be sought, which will represent a majority percentage of integrated management systems and municipal waste treatment plants, as well as public officials.

Within the framework of the project, the following activities will be developed:

  • Identify and review GHG calculation methodologies and tools in the waste sector
  • Agree on the GHG calculation methodology through working meetings with stakeholders
  • Write the GHG calculation protocol and define the basis for the development of a calculation tool
  • Disseminate the project and train companies in the sector
