The objective of the project has been to contribute to the compatibility of the tourist activities of brown bear observation and the conservation of the species and its habitat in the main bear areas of the Cantabrian Mountains and the Pyrenees.
The compatibility between bear watching tourism and the conservation of the species is not only possible but, thanks to the proposals defined and agreed upon in this project, bear tourism can become a tool for raising awareness and an engine of socio-economic development for the rural areas of the Cantabrian Mountains and the Pyrenees. In this project, the legal framework of this sector has been analysed, 37 sighting points in the Cantabrian Mountains have been analysed and 128 local actors (businessmen, mayors, directors of natural parks…) have been collaborated to prepare a document that allows the compatibility of conservation and tourist observation of the brown bear.
