This project by Friends of the Earth Spain aims to achieve compost made from the organic part of municipal waste. This is expected to reduce diffuse greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The initiative “Composting from municipal waste to reduce greenhouse gas emissions”, has as its first objective to assess and analyse existing initiatives through the selective separation of the organic matter fraction of municipal waste and its subsequent treatment by composting. This will make it possible to draw conclusions that can be extrapolated to other municipalities about the different separation and treatment systems.
The second objective has to do with the intention of the project to collaborate with compliance with the Landfill Directive 1999/31/EC, its transposition (RD 1481/2001) and with Law 22/11 on waste and contaminated soil, in its purpose to achieve the recycling of 50% by 2020 of the fraction of organic matter in waste.
Some of the activities that are included within the framework of the project are; the compilation of the results obtained in the different collection and composting systems, including the total sum of data and the calculation of potentialities at the state level. In addition, a calculation of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions avoided by the kilos of organic matter diverted from landfill will be carried out and a guide to good practices will be drawn up with conclusions and recommendations from experiences.
