Conservation and recovery actions of the Lesser Grey Shrike (Lanius minor)

MITECO

The actions carried out by the Associació d ́Amics del Centre de Fauna de Vallcale have served to contribute effectively to preventing the extinction of the Iberian population of the lesser grey shrike (Lanius minor), through the development of direct actions such as the management of the species and indirect actions such as habitat improvements.

The development of this project has contributed to the return of at least 19 specimens in Lleida, many of which had been released in previous phases of this project. Despite this good result, the breeding season has not been as productive as expected, due among other reasons to the strong bias of the sex-ratio that caused only 6 pairs to be created and the high rate of predation on the offspring.

In addition, an old breeding nucleus in Artesa has also been recovered by a couple released in 2016 in Alfes, who settled near the sites where the last pairs bred in 2009.

Finally, the release of 78 chicks this season will contribute to the conservation of the species for future seasons.
