Conservation of endangered species through collaboration and exchange of experiences between Spain and North Africa

MITECO

This project seeks to promote the implementation of appropriate conservation measures for endangered species and the establishment of a common framework of action in the countries to ensure the correct application of conservation recommendations, based on the exchange of knowledge and experiences between Spain and the Maghreb countries. The proposal is part of a training initiative for managers in the Maghreb and is partially funded by the MAVA foundation.

Improving the status of biological diversity by safeguarding ecosystems, species and genetic diversity is one of the commitments agreed by the signatory countries of the Convention on Biological Diversity. In this sense, the design and implementation of conservation strategies for species threatened with extinction is essential to halt the loss of biodiversity in the Mediterranean region. However, many Mediterranean countries lack the experience and sufficient training to carry out this task.

To ensure the correct achievement of these objectives, the following action plan has been drawn up:

  • Preparation of national strategies. Organization of three workshops with national working groups to prepare strategic plans for the conservation of threatened species at the national level. In each workshop, the necessary conservation measures for the previously identified species will be discussed in consensus with the authorities and other actors in each country as priorities for the implementation of action plans: Great Bustard (Morocco), Barbershop Monkey (Algeria), Arrui (Tunisia). The results of the discussion will be collected in a Strategic Conservation Plan document for each species.
  • Development of a transnational strategy for the conservation of Cuvier’s gazelle
  • Organization of a discussion workshop for the design of a transnational strategy for the conservation of the Cuvier’s gazelle. This workshop will present the national conservation strategies proposed by the different countries and discuss the conservation measures needed for the Cuvier’s gazelle in a transnational context (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia). The results of the discussion will be collected in a Transnational Strategic Plan document for the conservation of the Cuvier’s Gazelle.
  • Preliminary organization of an international meeting on strategic planning for the conservation of endangered species. The foundations will be laid for the realization of an international seminar workshop for the exchange of experiences acquired in the management of endangered species (challenges, solutions and opportunities). The main tasks to be developed include the identification of participants, speakers and venue as well as the preparation of content and topics to be discussed. The aim of the meeting will be to contribute to strengthening ties between the main actors in the conservation of the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean through the exchange of experiences and knowledge in strategic planning. During the meeting, the transnational strategy for the conservation of the Cuvier’s Gazelle and the Strategic Conservation Plans carried out in the first activity will be presented for final approval.
