MITECO

Fin whales, pilot whales and sperm whales are the focus of this project presented by the CIRCE organization.

Fin whales, pilot whales and sperm whales are the focus of this project presented by the CIRCE organization.

In order to develop the proposals for conservation plans for the species of migratory cetaceans of the peninsular Mediterranean, the following actions have been planned:

  1. Satellite tracking of fin whales and pilot whales to complete migration routes.
  2. Genetic analysis of the populations of fin whales in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic.
  3. Coastal monitoring of fin whale and sperm whale populations in the Strait of Gibraltar to draw up collision risk maps.
  4. Preparation of detailed reports for each of the species studied that bring together the knowledge acquired.
  5. Holding an international workshop to develop proposals for Conservation Plans.
  6. Carrying out evaluations based on the criteria established in the National Catalogue of Threatened Species (CNEA) for each of the migratory species.
  7. Preparation of an alternative proposal for inclusion criteria in the CNEA specific for migratory cetaceans.
  8. Preparation of proposals for Conservation Plans.
  9. Dissemination and publicity of the results of the project.
