The Balearic Federation of Speleology has been a beneficiary in the 2017 Call for Grants with this project, which aims to avoid the current pressures on the subsoil and raise awareness in society of the importance of the conservation of existing cavities, their surroundings and all the ecosystems they contain, applying effective protection management, conservation and recovery of the underground karst environment, and at the same time carry out studies to reach the knowledge of the current state and the ideal and precise scenario, of the optimal measures for the conservation of the cavities and the values they house.
The activities that have been carried out within the framework of the project are aimed at the conservation of the caves of the island of Mallorca, the dissemination of the richness of the Balearic subsoil and the importance of its protection.
The cleaning of 5 of the most important caves on the island of Mallorca has been achieved, due to their diversity of speleothems and their fragility, achieving a total of 11,950 square meters cleaned inside the caves. The cleaning work has consisted of the extraction of old exploration materials such as breathing tubes, carabiners, cables or ropes, as well as carbide remains. Garbage and plastic have also been removed and graffiti and marks have been cleaned from the walls.
For a better understanding of the visits made to the caves, surveys and interviews have been carried out with regular speleologists of these activities, making known the high degree of impact that many of these caves suffer.
In addition, as a result of the exploration activities of new areas, a book has been published with images of the formations and galleries of the Pas de Vallgornera cave.
