The Galician Association of Land Stewardship has completed the project ‘Consolidation of a stewardship agreement for the conservation of a forest of interest for the capercaillie and other Cantabrian fauna’. An initiative that has been supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition in the framework of its 2017 call for grants.
Its purpose has been to improve the conservation status of a forest of interest for the capercaillie and other Cantabrian fauna.
The project has been carried out on Mount Piornedo, an area of high natural value, in the region of Los Ancares in Lugo. To improve the problems of updating the property and the lack of identification of the owners, a renewal of the domain of the area has been carried out. Thus, a total of 721.17 hectares of habitats of high environmental value have been provided with a management plan, and a stewardship agreement has been consolidated and a new one signed in the heart of Ancares has been signed. All this was completed with the clearing of 3 hectares of fields.
At the same time, work has been done with other neighbouring properties, also of high natural value, with some of which stewardship agreements have been established to work together in the conservation and improvement of the natural heritage of these mountains.
