The initiative aims to expand knowledge about the marine environment in Spain, by strengthening marine research and the exchange of information between public and private entities.

Oceana proposes to contribute to the preparation of the “Spanish Inventory of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity” and, more specifically, to the “Inventory of Marine Species and Habitats”, by compiling information on the marine species present in Spanish waters.

To this end, the entity will carry out a work of sharing all the results of the previous expeditions carried out thanks to the support of the Biodiversity Foundation. It will also actively participate in the process of drawing up the list of habitats and marine species for the Spanish Inventory, being part of the different working groups created by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment.

Specific objectives include:

  • To promote research on the marine environment in Spain.
  • To contribute directly to the preparation of the “Spanish Inventory of Marine Habitats and Species”.
  • To promote knowledge of the seabed by Spanish society.

The activities to be carried out are:

  1. Sharing of available information on species and habitats present in Spanish waters.
  2. Cataloguing of species and habitats observed in previous Oceana campaigns.
  3. Mapping of the presence of habitats and species in Spanish waters.
