Creation of an environmental research, education and volunteering centre in the Casa de las Mareas

MITECO

The project will serve to convert the Casa de las Mareas, in Soano (Cantabria), into a centre for research, education and environmental volunteering.

The City Council of Arnuero (Cantabria) seeks to enable the disused building called Casa de las Mareas (Soano) in the area of the natural park of the Santoña marshes, and implement a program of activities that will turn it into a center for research, education and environmental volunteering. In the center, activities will be launched for the conservation of species and habitats, as well as to promote green employment.

The centre will carry out an annual census of waterbirds and statistics to measure water quality and level. The evolution of water temperature and the control of intertidal flows will also be studied. On the other hand, activities will be launched to eliminate invasive species. Specifically, it seeks to put an end to 100% of the presence of the feather duster in the area of the Joyel marsh and 25% of other invasive species.

Among the activities to be developed are:

  • Waterbird censuses
  • Ringing Station
  • Control of flows, levels and quality of water
  • Tracking Invertebrates, Amphibians, and Reptiles
  • Monitoring of aquatic vegetation
  • Establishment of indicators and measurement of aspects related to possible effects of climate change
  • Design of a program for the creation of a volunteer network and development of three days of fieldwork
  • Implementation of activities to promote leisure and sustainable tourism.
  • Training sessions for green entrepreneurs
