The FEDENCA Foundation has planned to obtain data and knowledge on woodcock (Scolopax rusticola), in order to guide the competent authorities in hunting matters of the different autonomous communities so that the applicable regulations for hunting and management of the species are uniform and follow common guidelines throughout the Spanish state. with the nuances of each autonomous territory.

The initiative “Data collection for the management of woodcock hunting (Scolopax rusticola) to be obtained through hunting monitoring, ringing and rtvs via satellite” aims to create a homogeneous legal regulation in Spain, in accordance with the global guidelines for the species that are oriented by the FANBPO (Federation of National Associations of Woodcocks of the Western Palearctic). the FACE (Federation of Hunters’ Associations of the European Union) and other European hunting and conservation entities.

For the contribution of methodology and data collection, FEDENCA and the Club de Cazadores de Becada de España (C.C.B.) have established a collaboration agreement in which the synergy between the two allows to take advantage of the social dimension of the former (450,000 federated hunters) and the specialization of those associated with the latter, which will enrich any project that is initiated in Spain by these entities. with a view to the comprehensive management of the woodcock.

Specifically, the project includes the following actions:

  • Campaigns to raise awareness among hunters and monitoring of woodcock hunting.
  • Seminars for the preparation of expert wing readers and training of ringing equipment (at least one day per year is planned).
  • Ringing campaigns (Álava, Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia, Guipúzcoa, León, Aragon, Burgos, Catalonia and Mallorca; also one in Northern Europe).
  • Monitoring of migratory routes of Iberian-wintering woodcocks (using satellite radio-telemetry techniques – RTVS).
  • Data exploitation with computer application and data editing.
  • Dissemination of the information obtained, both in Spain and through international entities.
