Demonstration of best agricultural practices based on scientific evidence to mitigate the impact of the sector on the Mar Menor (AgriConCiencia).

MITECO

  • The project works on governance between the agricultural sector, farm managers and the scientific-technical sector through co-innovation of good agricultural practices (hedgerow planting, pruning management, crop rotation, etc.) to mitigate the impacts of agricultural intensification.
  • It will also evaluate these practices and implement them in more than 600 hectares of citrus, horticultural and rainfed crops, while promoting green employment and new business models.

Mitigate the effects of conventional intensification of agriculture in the Campo de Cartagena in order to establish a sustainable balance between agricultural activity and the preservation of the Mar Menor.

Among its specific objectives are:

  • Define the governance model between the agricultural and scientific sectors.
  • Identify, evaluate and apply agricultural practices that recover soil functionality, reducing the use of fertilizers and limiting soil erosion and runoff, enhance ecosystem services and reduce the use of pesticides.
  • Promote the creation of green jobs, the development of capabilities, the creation of new business models, the dissemination of knowledge and its transfer.
  • Co-innovation for the design and implementation of best agricultural practices and nature-based solutions in 604 hectares of citrus, horticultural and rainfed crops.
  • Pilot tests based on soil management, plant cover, crop rotation and diversification, restitution to rainfed land and wildlife management.
  • Cost-effectiveness analysis of agricultural practices under a technical, economic and environmental characterization and creation of new business models with a gender perspective.
  • Transfer of results and training to other stakeholders to replicate the agricultural practices that prove to be the most effective and best received by the sector.
