The project “Development of monitoring methodologies for species in critical situation: the case of the capercaillie in the Cantabrian Mountains” seeks to know the demographic situation and current distribution area of the Cantabrian capercaillie.
The current population of capercaillie in the Cantabrian mountain range is estimated at about 300 specimens (SD 20 example), 199 males and 92 females. The current area of occupation can be estimated at about 350km2.
Within the framework of this project, developed by the Tierra Ibérica Foundation, the capercaillie table has been set up, made up of NGOs linked to the conservation of the species and experts attached to universities and research centres who have participated in projects or studies related to the species. The main objective is to serve as a meeting point to join forces between different people and organizations for the conservation of the species.
