Digitization and Integration of Historical Information of Forest Management Instruments (DIGIFOR)

MITECO

  • The project aims to preserve and enhance the value of forest documentary heritage through its digitization, standardization and integration, ensuring access to historical information and its comparability with current data.
  • This will preserve the documentary heritage that constitutes the Library of Management Projects and Revisions of the Spanish Forestry Administration, facilitating access to documents since 1870 and integrating historical information with current digital information.

The general objective is to preserve and enhance the value of forest documentary heritage through its digitization, standardization and integration, ensuring access to historical information and its comparability with current data. This will improve knowledge about the evolution of the national forest heritage since 1870, facilitating its use for forest planning and management. It will also contribute to the assessment of the dasocratic state of forest systems and their role as carbon sinks, providing tools for informed decision-making in forest conservation and management.

It has the following specific objectives:

  • Digitize and standardize historical documents to develop a digital repository of Forest Management Instrument (IOF) documents and/or records of silvicultural interventions.
  • Develop methodologies for the standardized extraction of data of interest that allow the integration of historical dasocratic information with current data.
  • Integrate historical information with current digital information and facilitate access to digitized information to enable comparison of the dasocratic status of forest systems of forest carbon sinks and others.
  • Facilitate the adoption and effective use of the developed methodology and the consultation and integration of information in digital repositories.
  • Creation of a digital repository of historical documents of Forest Management Instruments (IOF) and/or records of silvicultural interventions.
  • Development of methodologies for the standardized extraction of dasocratic data and their integration into a database.
  • Testing of various image recognition methodologies using Artificial Intelligence systems.
  • Analysis of the dasometric and dasocratic information collected to assess the evolution of carbon stocks in previously characterised forests.
  • Organization of explanatory workshops on the methodology developed and the consultation of the information.
  • Publication of a technical manual on the methodology developed and the main results obtained.
