The City Council of Donostia/San Sebastián is committed to adapting to climate change with the project “Donostia/San Sebastián se ADAPTA”, which has the support of the Biodiversity Foundation.
In 2014 the city council signed the Mayors Adapt initiative and a permanent commission on adaptation was created with the participation of all municipal departments with implications on the subject and during 2015 an exhaustive diagnosis was carried out and the adaptation plan of the municipality was drawn up.
The project has served to carry out an estimate of the impacts of climate change on beaches, focusing attention on the effects of waves and rising sea levels, improving information to prevent emergency situations due to extreme waves and floods and improvement of information to citizens with the placement of a tide gauge and the development of an app, analyse the impact of climate change on the municipality’s critical services and infrastructures and define adaptation measures to improve the resilience of the urban system to the effects of climate change and study through the hydraulic and hydrological analyses of the streams and valleys of Polygon 27, in order to model the load that may enter the sanitation network in this area.
