This project aims to use rapeseed oil to manufacture biodiesel, which can be used by self-employed freight transport workers to replace fossil diesel.
The main objective of the project “Employment, agriculture, biodiesel, transport and climate change” is to use rapeseed oil as a national raw material to manufacture biodiesel EN14214, which can be used by self-employed road freight transport workers to replace the polluting fossil fuel.
One of the essential ideas of the initiative is to inform the owners of these lands and advise them of the potential of the existing lands, both nationally and in the communities of Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura. In addition, it is intended to involve rural women in the handling and marketing of rapeseed protein, a product that remains after the extraction of the oil and that will be used for livestock feed.
Another goal he highlights is to have enough raw material to be used by self-employed freight transport professionals , replacing traditional diesel.
The activities that have been carried out within the framework of this project are:
- Create a website with specific and permanent information about the project.
- Publish, both on paper and audiovisual, information for potential growers.
- Organize information days in Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura for farmers.
- Realization of two test fields: in Extremadura. The one in Castilla la Mancha has been changed for weather reasons.
- Hold a conference with carriers.
The development of the project has managed to highlight the importance of the use of renewable energies as a climate change mitigation measure. During the course of the project, four information days have been held in Castilla – La Mancha and Extremadura with a total of 600 attendees, with the participation of personnel from the world of research and the private sector, and two rapeseed crops have been carried out as a pilot experience that have been visited by 500 farmers. To publicise the project, a website has been created that received more than 500,000 visits during the project, two videos have been edited on rapeseed cultivation and the use of biodiesel in transport, and an informative guide to the project and an explanatory report have been prepared.
In addition, the project has aroused great interest in the Spanish agricultural sector and in the academic sector, leading to the signing of an R+D+i project with the University of Extremadura, to increase the knowledge necessary to put the project into practice and to have rapeseed oil to manufacture biodiesel EN14214.
