Energy poverty and heat waves in urban areas

MITECO

The project has sought to promote the application of climate change adaptation measures to reduce the impact of heat waves in cities.

The initiative “Energy poverty and heat waves in urban areas” of the Association of Environmental Sciences (ACA) has sought toEncourage the implementation of climate change adaptation measures to reduce the impact of heat waves on cities, summer energy poverty and the emissions associated with their implementation. To this end, the project wanted to involve different actors to carry out a collective analysis of the available measures, reaching solutions that contemplate the social, economic and design reality of urban space at different scales, from the home to the neighbourhood. The initiative has had the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition within the framework of its call for grants.

The project has involved the participation of 62 professionals in the workshops of regional and local administrations, thus promoting synergies between the two. With this, it has been possible to propose coordinated actions to improve the effectiveness in the application of measures to adapt to heat waves in urban areas. Thanks to the participation of 30 households in Castilla La Mancha and the Community of Madrid, it has been possible to know what adaptation measures, with the resources they have, can be carried out. In addition, 20 of these households have been advised through a demonstrative and personalised programme to analyse and disseminate the existing measures to reduce the effects of heat waves and energy poverty in summer on their homes.
