Environmental information as a tool for biodiversity conservation

MITECO

To improve environmental and diversity awareness, the Association of Environmental Sciences (ACA) has completed a project that has given rise to the III Study on the Quality of Regional Environmental Information on the Internet. Thanks to this, it has been possible to obtain results on environmental information applied by the different government bodies, to make improvements.

The Association of Environmental Sciences (ACA) has completed the project ‘Environmental information as a tool for biodiversity conservation’. This initiative has had the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition within the framework of its 2018 call for grants.

Its purpose has been to promote the conservation of biodiversity by citizens through the knowledge, dissemination and improvement of environmental information offered by the autonomous communities through the internet.

To achieve the objectives, the main results of the project have been the preparation of the III Study on the Quality of Regional Environmental Information on the Internet, which has been prepared with the analysis of more than 1200 aspects in each of the regional websites. In addition, 9 informative articles have been prepared, which promote the use of environmental information available on the websites of the autonomous communities, and support the information work they provide. Contributing to a better dissemination, two technical conferences open to the public have been held, in which the participation of regional representatives and MITECO itself has been achieved.

Throughout the project and the different phases of preparation of the study, the Autonomous Communities themselves have collaborated and participated in the consideration of its usefulness in improving the information they offer to citizens. All the actions of the project have been developed with the aim of generating tools that improve the environmental information offered by the autonomous communities, aware that the impact of the project will promote the conservation of biodiversity, since people conserve what they know.

The project has made it possible to publish the III Study on the Quality of Regional Environmental Information on the Internet, analysing aspects on the websites of the 17 Autonomous Communities, generating a ranking in which Andalusia, Catalonia and the Community of Madrid lead the environmental information offered on their websites. Likewise, 2 technical conferences have been held, one at the beginning of the project and the other at the end of it, in which 58 people and those responsible for environmental information from 5 autonomous communities have participated. The project has had an impact on at least 11 written media and 1 national radio programme and has allowed the autonomous communities to have a working tool for the present and future of environmental information.
