Within the framework of this project, the aim is to obtain estimates of the abundance of cetaceans present in the waters of the eastern Balearic Islands.
Within the framework of this TURSIOPS Association project, the aim is to obtain estimates of the abundance of cetaceans present, according to stratified sampling, for the determination of spatial/temporal patterns in the east of the Balearic Islands, and their application in the design and management of protected areas.
Thanks to this initiative, a list of identified species will be drawn up, as well as abundance estimates by both main species and stratum. A management plan by species and strata will also be established for the proposed areas.
Activities to achieve the expected results include:
- Seasonal campaigns of coverage by strata following the “distance sampling” protocol for the simultaneous estimation of cetacean populations by visual and acoustic censuses.
- Calculation of population estimates by areas and times of cetacean populations.
- Preparation of a proposal for a dynamic management plan for cetaceans in the east of the Balearic Islands, as a basis for the management plans of the areas to be protected.
