The European Biodiversity Partnership, Biodiversa+, which gives continuity to the ERANETS of the Horizon 2020 programme, is one of the key actions of the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy 2030 under the European Union’s (EU) framework programme for research and innovation (R+I) for the period 2021 -2027, Horizon Europe. Jointly developed by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG R&I) and the Directorate-General for the Environment (DG ENV), it aims to provide a global and multidisciplinary platform connecting local, national and European research and innovation programmes with a common goal: to return European biodiversity to the path of recovery by 2030.

Biodiversa+ was formed in 2021 as action 81 of the EU’s 2030 Biodiversity Strategy and has the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Eologic Transition and the Demographic Challenge as one of the Spanish funding partners together with the State Research Agency (AEI) and the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI). The funding partners are joined by the European Commission itself, which contributes an additional 30% to the funds allocated by national entities to finance transnational research projects that stop the loss of biodiversity and can be implemented at the European level, generating a positive impact on society.

Biodiversa+ has succeeded in bringing together research entities and regulatory and governance bodies to establish a harmonised European network of biodiversity observatories, to generate a scientific base of knowledge in the development and deployment of nature-based solutions, and to implement a wide range of activities that increase relevance, impact and visibility of the EU’s environmental objectives.

The first call “Supporting biodiversity and ecosystem protection across land and sea” was launched by the Partnership in September 2021 and will be resolved in the last quarter of 2022 and the second call on biodiversity follow-up and monitoring will be launched soon. The Biodiversity Foundation will financially support the Spanish partners of the projects selected by the Partnership that focus their actions on improving the marine environment.

Biodiversa+ opens the BiodivMon call for research proposals to improve the monitoring of biodiversity and ecosystem changes at a transnational level

The European Biodiversity Partnership, Biodiversa+, announces the opening of the BiodivMon call, for transnational research proposals focused on: “Improving transnational monitoring of biodiversity and ecosystem change for science and society”.

This call aims to support three-year transnational research projects focused on one or more of the following three themes (not exclusive to each other):

  • Innovation and harmonization of methods and tools for the capture and management of biodiversity monitoring data.
  • Address knowledge gaps in status, dynamics and trends to reverse biodiversity losses.
  • Make use of available biodiversity monitoring data.

Projects that combine aspects of more than one theme are encouraged. The projects funded by this call should allow us to better characterize, understand and report on the state and trends of biodiversity. This call covers all ecosystems, i.e. terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems in Europe and beyond.

ELIGIBILITY AND EVALUATION CRITERIA

Research teams will be invited to form transnational research consortia with eligible partners from at least 3 different countries participating in the call and applying for funding from at least three different funding bodies (including a minimum of two different EU Member States or Associated Countries ). Proposals must be written exclusively in English. To join a partner or a project you can consult this Biodiversa+ partner search tool.

The evaluation will be carried out according to the following criteria:

  • In the first step (pre-proposal phase): Integration within the scope of the calls, research innovation and impact.
  • In the second step (full proposal phase): (scientific) excellence , quality and efficiency of implementation and impact (including the expected impact on governance and/or society and the approach to collaboration of the participants).

In order to properly prepare the call, the following tools are available:

CALENDAR OF THE CALL AND PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES

The selection process will be carried out in two stages, with the mandatory electronic submission of a pre-proposal in the first step and the electronic submission of a complete proposal in the second step, through the EPSS (Electronic Proposal Submission System) platform. The link to the EPSS platform will be available soon on the Biodiversa+ website. The most important dates on the calendar to take into account are the following:

  • Launch of the call: Thursday, September 8, 2022.
  • Deadline for submission of pre-proposals (mandatory): Wednesday, 9 November 2022, 15:00 CET (Brussels local time).
  • Deadline for submission of full proposals: Wednesday 5 April 2023, 15:00 CEST (local time in Brussels).

The complete and updated list of participating funding agencies and the budget they have allocated to finance projects in this call is available on the Biodiversa+ website.

It is important to note that each partner participating in a project must meet the eligibility criteria and specific rules of the funding bodies in their country/region.
