The main objective of the project is to conserve two plant species of the highest priority in the north of the peninsula: Aster pyrenaeus and Centaurium somedanum.
More specifically, it is intended to:
- Have representative germplasm (with respect to total genetic variability) of the known populations of Aster pyrenaeus and Centaurium somedanum.
- Characterize the quality and viability of the collected seeds, as a basis for their ex situ conservation and the development of future preservation, recovery or research plans.
- Awareness and dissemination of the work of botanical gardens and germplasm banks in the conservation of plants in protected areas, using the two plants of the project as “flagship species”.
The specific actions planned are the following:
- Harvest planning.
- Systematic sampling.
- Seed viability and quality analysis.
- Ex situ conservation protocols.
- Dissemination of the conservation of both species.
- Holding conferences on ex situ conservation.
