Expansion and environmental improvement of the Cañizar Lagoon

MITECO

The Cañizar Lagoon, one of the largest freshwater wetlands in inland Spain, suffered drainage works at the beginning of the eighteenth century that led to its disappearance.

The Cañizar Lagoon, one of the largest freshwater wetlands in inland Spain, suffered drainage works at the beginning of the eighteenth century that led to its disappearance.

However, the City Councils of Villarquemado and Cella proposed the partial recovery of the old wetland, which currently exceeds 360 hectares of flooded area.

This project aims to expand the flooded area, improve the management of vegetation and infrastructures for public use and visitor control, as well as the dissemination of its natural values.

The specific measures proposed are the following:

1. Expand the flooded area of the lagoon by 14 hectares.
2. Establish the perimeter of the lagoon by placing access doors.
3. Allow the confinement of large herbivores (such as horses or cows) for vegetation management.
4. To promote the compatibility of the public use of the wetland with the conservation of the space.
5. Spatially delimit the areas of public use.
7. Disseminate the environmental values of the lagoon.
