The main objective of the project carried out by the City Council of Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation, is the cataloguing and inventory of all water points (springs, fountains, ditches, small lagoons, lagoons, etc.) present in the Montes de Propio de Jerez de la Frontera, an area that has little alteration, is of great extension and of very high ecological value.
The conclusions of this project are as follows:
1. Cataloguing of more than 90 water points (fountains, springs, reservoirs and similar). This is a new resource of great interest for the City Council of Jerez and that is now accessible to citizens. Along with the characteristics of the place, the cultural, historical and ethnographic values of each point stand out.
2. Ecological regeneration of 13 water points.
3. Identification of more than 2200 species. This is undoubtedly one of the main results that make Montes de Propio one of the places where biodiversity is best known.
4. Inventory of taxonomic groups that are difficult to identify as they are not very unknown, such as bryophytes, lichens, fungi, molluscs or various insect groups (beetles, hemiptera, nocturnal lepidoptera or hymenoptera). The number of species identified is of great scientific value due to the difficulties in identifying these groups.
5. Identification of rare or new species. Several species not previously described have appeared, such as an aquatic mollusk (G. Mercuria), a gall mosquito (O. diptera, Cicedomido), a rare plant (G. Daveaua) or a beetle identified at the end of the nineteenth century and of which photographs were not available (Trochantodon tibiellus)
6. Creation of an image bank composed of more than 3000 images of the biodiversity of the area.
7. Reintroduction of the aquatic fern Marsilea batardae. Despite being a pilot test, this action can help to carry out similar projects.
