Fight against climate change through the conservation of water-related biodiversity in the Montes de Propio de Jerez de la Frontera

MITECO

The main objective of the project being carried out by the City Council of Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz) with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment, is the cataloguing and inventory of all water points (springs, fountains, ditches, small lagoons, lagoons, etc.). present in the Montes de Propio de Jerez de la Frontera, an area that has little alteration, is of great extension and of very high ecological value.

Together with its inventory, the associated fauna and flora will be studied and identified, paying particular interest to the species of terrestrial and aquatic plants with special attention to the threatened plants present in the place such as rhododendron or laurel forest vegetation, among others; as well as the invertebrate fauna, especially threatened odonates since there are at least three species classified as endangered, and vertebrate fauna, especially amphibians since there is an ecotype of salamander (S.S. longirostris) present in the area.

Finally, the restoration of at least ten water points will be carried out to allow the formation of a sheet of water (more or less permanent, free of access by cows and wild boars) for the settlement of plants and animals typical of these environments.
