Defining and agreeing on the Action Plan of the Starlight Reserve of Fuerteventura is the objective of this initiative, starting with the adaptation of lighting on public roads and paths, within the UNESCO night sky protection program.
To this end, work began in sensitive landscape areas and public lighting was adapted. It also contributed to avoiding light pollution in exceptional landscapes and protected areas, all tasks for which the participation of the population has been encouraged, with the aim of achieving responsible outdoor lighting.
The specific actions have been the following:
- Preparation of the action plan. Preparation of an inventory of resources, characterization of nightscapes and zoning proposal.
- Territorial study on light pollution and how it affects the Protected Natural Area.
- Dissemination and awareness campaign in two phases.
- Achievement of the final declaration.
After the end of the project, these are the main results obtained:
- Characterization and diagnostic study, which covers fields such as the quality of the night sky and light pollution, the energy dimension and the commitment to climate change.
- Zoning of the Starlight Reserve: fundamentals and application criteria.
- Drafting of the Action Plan, which includes measures relating to the protection of cultural heritage, biodiversity, nightscapes, as well as actions to disseminate and promote the island as a Starlight tourist destination.
- Creation of a website and edition of an informative brochure.
- Dissemination campaigns, events and exhibitions.
- Seminars and conferences, including the meeting of experts on the “Starlight Tourist Destination Certification System”, held in Fuerteventura in October 2008, and the seminar and international meeting “Starlight Reserves and World Heritage: Scientific, Cultural and Environmental Values”, which took place on the island on 10 and 11 March 2009.
- Adoption of the Declaration on the Defence of the Night Sky and the Right to Starlight (20 April 2009).
