The project will offer updated and impartial information on the sustainability and improvement needs of 6 of the main fisheries exploited by the Spanish deep-sea fleet of Gran Sol and the Cantabrian-Northwest coast (mainly concentrated in the coastal provinces of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country), through the study of the state of the stocks, their management models and the effects of these fisheries on the environment.
The information collected will be systematized according to the criteria established by the SUSTANAIBLE FISHERIES PARTNERSHIP (SFP) and will be uploaded to the FISHSOURCE online database, where it can be consulted by the general public and specialized distributors.
SFP is an NGO that improves access to information by providing guidance on the responsible sourcing of seafood and strengthens the ability of marketers to influence policies and management that improve the state of fisheries. It is important for the fishing sector to publicise its involvement in this initiative, which seeks to promote the responsible consumption of fish from sustainable stocks, promoting the sustainable management and use of the target species.
FISHSOURCE is a platform of SFP, an international organization that will support this project, and which has recently presented this platform in Spain, which presents an opportunity for the sector to get involved and incorporate the information of the main stocks of Spanish fisheries into this database.
