Impact of climate change on water resources and aridity conditions in Sierra Nevada

MITECO

The project carried out by the University of Córdoba aims to evaluate the trends of torrential snow in the short, medium and long term, as well as its impact on water resources and aridity conditions in the Sierra Nevada National Park and its associated basins. The project is completed with the elaboration, thanks to the information previously obtained, of an annual and seasonal forecast model on the possible scenarios of torrential and aridity in the area due to the effects of global warming.

Among the actions carried out to predict the possible scenarios in the Sierra Nevada National Park are:

  • The updating of snow indicator variables at the control points of previous projects and the trends observed.
  • The definition of snow torrential and aridity indices (ITyA) in the area and their analysis.
  • The design of an annual and seasonal forecast of the snow indicator variables in Sierra Nevada on a global scale and in the pilot area of the Guadalfeo basin.
  • The definition of the implications of the results obtained for the ecosystem services associated with snow and for the management of water resources in Sierra Nevada.
  • The creation of a programme to disseminate the results of the Project.
