MITECO

  • This project aims to improve knowledge about the conservation status of birds in Catalonia by digitizing, updating and standardizing historical and current data.
  • Pre-2003 ringing records, breeding bird atlases and historical field observations will be digitized, facilitating their integration into modern databases; and tools such as the Public Ornithological Information Server of Catalonia will be optimized.

This initiative aims to improve knowledge about the conservation status of birds in Catalonia through the digitization and standardization of current historical data. Through the integration and accessibility of this information, it is intended to strengthen the scientific basis for the conservation of natural heritage and biodiversity, facilitating its use in environmental decision-making and in the planning of conservation strategies.

Its specific objectives include:

  • Digitization of historical data with special attention to threatened species and/or with notable population declines in the last 50 years.
  • Completion and updating of current datasets.
  • Improved database connectivity.
  • Courses for ICO staff.
  • Completion of bird ringing data prior to 2003.
  • Digitization of the data from the first atlas of the breeding birds of Catalonia and completion of the data from the second atlas of the nesting birds of Catalonia.
  • Campaign to digitize historical field observations via Ornitho.cat.
  • Completion of the data from readings of special bird marks.
  • Improvement and updating of the content of the Public Ornithological Information Server of Catalonia (SIOC).
  • Centralization of the taxonomy and unique users for all the entity’s projects.
  • Completion of PostgreSQL, R and Python courses for ICO staff.
