Integrating adaptation and resilience to climate risks into lifestyles: exemplary citizen initiatives (CLIMACTIVA)

MITECO

Through this project, the Galician cooperative Feitoría Verde has identified and compiled exemplary lifestyles in citizen initiatives for adaptation to climate change. Specifically, there are 11 collective initiatives throughout Spain that meet a series of defined criteria, such as the climate risk addressed and territorial distribution, as well as being of citizen origin and based on lifestyles.

Based on all the information collected during the research process, an informative document has been prepared that includes the most relevant results, together with a battery of recommendations and suggestions aimed at both citizen initiatives and the different administrations responsible for climate risk management.

In recent years, the concept of “lifestyles” has acquired renewed prominence in the face of the limitations identified in other concepts, such as the promotion of environmentally responsible habits or behaviors. Along these lines, the project proposes to advance in the knowledge and dissemination of alternative lifestyles framed in citizen initiatives that respond to the four main climate hazards identified in the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change 2021-2030 (floods, forest fires, heat waves and droughts), with a community and gender approach.

Its relevance is based on the importance of linking individual and collective action in local contexts to articulate adaptation strategies in relation to learning processes through the experience and knowledge generated by other people and collectives.

Based on the results, the aim is to initiate the elaboration of an inventory of inspiring practices and a concrete educational proposal.

The main objective of the project is to identify and characterize resilient and adapted lifestyles in citizen initiatives facing climate hazards.

To this end, the following specific objectives have been established:

  • Compile and systematize existing information in Spain and internationally that explores the relationship between lifestyles, community action and gender roles and gaps.
  • Plan and develop a social research process of case studies with a gender focus on lifestyles in citizen initiatives.
  • Analyze the results of the research process.
  • To compile exemplary lifestyles in the citizen initiatives analyzed.
  • Integrate the conclusions of the project into a concrete educational proposal.
  • Disseminate the results of the project.
  • Bibliographic review of scientific articles, reports and national and international publications related to the subject of the last five years.
  • Identification and characterization of case studies through a mapping of citizen initiatives for adaptation to climate change.
  • Design of a methodological research strategy according to the needs and circumstances of the case studies and the objectives of the project.
  • Development of the field work.
  • Conducting a qualitative analysis of the data collected.
  • Comparative analysis of case studies.
  • Drafting of a document compiling exemplary lifestyles in the citizen initiatives analyzed.
  • Construction of an educational proposal according to the results and suggestions.
  • Return of results and meetings with organizations, competent administrations and other entities.
  • Dissemination and communication of the project.
  • 78 documents related to the relationship between lifestyles, community action, gender roles and gaps and climate change have been reviewed, including 43 articles and academic works, and 35 institutional and/or informative reports. This review has made it possible to establish a solid and updated conceptual basis on the subject.
  • The project has selected 11 collective initiatives throughout Spain that meet a series of defined criteria, such as the climate risk addressed and territorial distribution, as well as being of citizen origin and based on lifestyles.
  • The 11 initiatives studied were: Heat Schools, in Seville; “Ocho Caños” Irrigation Community, in Cáceres; Barrios Verdes, in Gran Canaria; Barrio Zofío Neighborhood Association, in Madrid; Berdesia, in Navarre; Pego Viu Association, in Alicante; Comunidade de Montes de Baroña, in La Coruña; Aragon’s Seed Network; Alcalá de Ebro flood monitoring group, Aragon; Neighborhoods for the Climate, in Cordoba; e Comunidade de aguas “O Galiñeiro”, in Pontevedra.
  • Interviews have been conducted with people directly involved in the initiative, addressing issues such as the latest episodes of risk; the reaction of the citizens in this regard; coordination and relations with public administrations; the type of activities carried out; or the gender dimension in participation, among others.
  • Based on all the information collected during the research process, an informative document has been prepared that includes the most relevant results, together with a battery of recommendations and suggestions aimed at both citizen initiatives and the different administrations responsible for climate risk management.
  • An educational proposal for the promotion of climate adaptation has been developed, designed to be accessible and replicable in different contexts.
